Mental illnesses are the most common reason for sickness absence. Needless to say, the direction is worrying. Absences due to sick leave are often caused by unspecified anxiety and exhaustion. Exhaustion is the result of prolonged stress and it can be difficult to detect. In today’s world work fatigue and cynicism are often considered normal. However, they are not. The costs generated by chronic fatigue are high – both in human suffering as well as economic costs for the organization.

To remedy this, we all need to increase awareness and understanding. Understanding how to identify the onset of burnout in ourselves, co-workers, or subordinates before it leads to exhaustion. Too often the fatigue which can lead to chronic exhaustion, is seen as an individual’s problem. If there is more than one person in the work community, who is suffering from burnout, it is important to go through a broad burnout assessment and identify the underlying causes. A sustainable recovery from burnout requires a systematic review, and most likely a reform, of the community policies, structures, roles, responsibilities and processes.
